If you find yourself with a spare sunny, summer’s day, make your way down to Half Moon Bay in Black Rock to have a peek at the shipwreck of the HMVS Cerberus.

Named after the mythological three headed hound that guards the underworld, this steam powered warship was built in 1869 and served as a monitor ship for the Victorian Government. During the first world war, the Cerberus served as the Port Guard Ship for the Port of Melbourne before being decommissioned In 1921.

The Cerberus now serves as the breakwater for the Black Rock Yacht Club and can be seen easily from the shore, or, more ideally from the wide bay windows of the Cerberus Beach Cafe. So grab a bite and soak in the maritime history of Victoria.
